The next step is to return with my little kit of gear I use to plein air sketch, my easel, and a large carry case of papers and begin drawing. Often if I start large I never quite finish the drawing, it&#8217;s too ambitious outdoors, so I usually stay small and get to take home little samples of the site that go up on the studio wall along with photos.<\/p>\n<p>From that point I usually move to canvas, then back to drawing, then back to canvas, and even back to the site for more sitting if I&#8217;m feeling lost in a piece. For me there&#8217;s always a story there in the landscape, and after finding a new site it can take me a few months of working to stumble across how I&#8217;d like to tell it&#8217;s story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: What will it mean to you to apart of the artist in residence in Las Cruces, New Mexico?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AW: Well it\u2019s such a thrill. I actually cried on the phone when I got the call. Doh! But it really was a measure of how great the opportunity feels. I have been to <a title=\"Las Cruces Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.las-cruces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Las Cruces <\/a>before and already know some of the places I will sketch and paint over my 7 weeks there. And it\u2019s a rich cultural area, so the absorbing of place, the meeting of other artists, and working over there for a period with a fellow Bundaberg artist will be a great experience.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3524\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Adrienne-Williams-02.jpg\" alt=\"Adrienne Williams\" width=\"760\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Adrienne-Williams-02.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Adrienne-Williams-02-300x95.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><strong>AC: Do you have a favourite artist\/s or art movement\/s?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AW: I\u2019m loving everything I see of <a title=\"Del Kathery Barton Sample \" href=\"http:\/\/www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au\/prizes\/archibald\/2013\/29358\/\" target=\"_blank\">Del Katherine Barton<\/a>\u2019s work. And this year I went to <a title=\"Museum of Contemporary Art Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mca.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney\u2019s MCA<\/a> to see the<a title=\"Chuck Close\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/about-the-museum\/press-room\/exhibitions\/2003\/chuck-close-prints--process-and-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\"> Chuck Close <\/a>survey show <em><a title=\"Print and Process Show\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mca.com.au\/exhibition\/chuck-close-prints-process-and-collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Prints and Process\u2019<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0 When you put yourself on a plane to go see an exhibition, of course you have high hopes and I can honestly say it exceeded them. I have not come out of a show so in awe of someone in a long time. His tenacity, experimentation, and his understanding of colour are just extraordinary.<\/p>\n<p>I am also enamoured with <a title=\"John Wolseley Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnwolseley.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Wolseley\u2019s <\/a>process and his works. How I wish his<a title=\"National Gallery of Victoria\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ngv.vic.gov.au\/exhibition\/nordic-cool-modernist-design\/?utm_source=hp&amp;utm_medium=ss&amp;utm_campaign=s9\" target=\"_blank\"> NGV <\/a>show with it\u2019s 6m long watercolours would tour up to Brisbane. I attended a 5 day workshop he ran many years ago and I learned so much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: Your work is always vibrant and rich. How important is colour to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AW: I guess colour is everything, it\u2019s probably at the core of why I paint, and it definitely drives the composition in most of the current work. In this show there are so many blues and strong colours \u2013 a nod to the rains we had all through Spring and Summer 2014.
