Later on at school, I remember drawing a squirrel &#8230; Aged about 9, I was ushered to the headmaster&#8217;s room. The drawing\u00a0quickly became the talk of the school. In my mind looking back, it was every Inch a <a title=\"Albrecht Durer Met Museum Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/durr\/hd_durr.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Durer<\/a>. My school teachers nurtured what they saw\u00a0to the point of giving me paint and all the other\u00a0materials I needed as well as every\u00a0encouragement. I was one of the youngest to win a scholarship to uni at the time, but decided to go into engineering. It was years later while in <a title=\"Australia Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.australia.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> that I took it up as professionally. I was still\u00a0painting before that but it was a small painting by <a title=\"Paul Gauguin Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/gaug\/hd_gaug.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Gauguin<\/a>\u00a0that inspired me to change my whole approach and paint as a career. I was moved not\u00a0only by\u00a0the awkwardness but touched by the sensitivity and expressive quality of the subject which was two young boys wrestling. Everything of note that has happened career wise came\u00a0from that viewing 14 or\u00a0so years ago in Sydney. To quote <a title=\"Simone de Beauvoir Biography\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iep.utm.edu\/beauvoir\/\" target=\"_blank\">Simone de Beauvoir<\/a> in\u00a0<a title=\"Everybody Matters By Mary Robinson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/lifematters\/mary-robinson\/4293554\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Robinson&#8217;s book&#8230;..Everybody Matters<\/a>. In Transition.\u00a0<em>\u201cTo show your true ability, to go a little beyond them, to dare, to seek, to invent.<\/em><em>It is at these moments that new talents are revealed, discovered and realised.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>These words sum up perfectly my transition from traditional to expressive artist.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/John-Maitland-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3394\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/John-Maitland-2.png\" alt=\"John Maitland\" width=\"760\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/John-Maitland-2.png 760w, https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/John-Maitland-2-300x137.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><strong>AC: Where and when does your best work happen? Could you please talk us through a normal day for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>JM: The best work,\u00a0I believe,\u00a0is always spontaneous and the best work is done in my home studio.
