There are trees all around that capture the sea breeze and I can see the ocean in the distance. This elemental interplay is the greatest inspiration for my work. As a lifetime surfer, I feel like I became an environmentalist by default &#8211; nurturing our natural world in a sustainable way is the only way forward for humanity and for our planet. Through my work I try to capture our worlds beauty and life-giving energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: When and how did you first fall in love with art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM: I won the school art prize in grade one, although it wasn&#8217;t until after a year of a Psychology\u00a0major at <a title=\"Griffith Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.griffith.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Griffith University<\/a>, that I decided to switch Visual Arts, a faculty that embraced thinking outside of the box, instead of within it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3354\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason004.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Mason\" width=\"760\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason004.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason004-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: What is your studio like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM: My studio is well organized so that I can pick up where I left off, when those creative impulses start firing, without scrounging around looking for a particular colour or brush.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: When do you feel your most creative? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM: This depends, although I&#8217;ll say that rather than force it out, I&#8217;m learning that it&#8217;s ok to stop, go for a surf or a walk, and come back to it with fresh eyes. I can work for anywhere between 4 hours and 16 hours at a time if the connection is strong. Music has always been my drug of choice, and song lyrics often find there way into my artwork titles. Energy in the studio is like a rollercoaster ride, so the music can be <a title=\"Led Zeppelin Biography\" href=\"https:\/\/rockhall.com\/inductees\/led-zeppelin\/bio\/\" target=\"_blank\">Led Zeppelin<\/a>, <a title=\"AC\/DC Biography\" href=\"https:\/\/rockhall.com\/inductees\/ac-dc\/bio\/\" target=\"_blank\">AC\/DC<\/a>, <a title=\"The Rolling Stones Biography\" href=\"https:\/\/rockhall.com\/inductees\/the-rolling-stones\/bio\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Rolling Stones<\/a>, <a title=\"Triple J Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/triplej\/\" target=\"_blank\">Triple J radio <\/a>or silence &#8211; sometimes silence is best.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3355\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason02.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Mason\" width=\"760\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason02.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DanMason02-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: How would you describe what you do to someone who hasn\u2019t seen your art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM: It&#8217;s tough for me to describe my art. When people find out that I&#8217;ve been painting full-time for over twelve years, they usually say, &#8220;That sounds really cruisy&#8221;, when in truth inventing something new each day is a super challenging endeavor, although when it works it\u2019s very rewarding. I&#8217;ve spent 50 000+ hours painting, playing and developing my oil and mixed media technical armory, and feel as though I&#8217;m at a point where I can call on all of this learning to create solid work.
