The way I talk to people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC:\u00a0 What\/who inspires you to create?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>Artists I admire, my favourite being <a title=\"Egon Schiele\" href=\"http:\/\/www.egon-schiele.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Egon Schiele <\/a>and <a title=\"Alberto Giacometti\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/alberto-giacometti-1159\" target=\"_blank\">Alberto Giacometti<\/a>. My artist inspiration also includes authors. The Chinese author <a title=\"Jung Chang \" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/10314619\/Jung-Chang-interview-why-Im-still-banned-in-China.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jung Chang <\/a>was very descriptive. Another author who can paint an incredible picture with words was <a title=\"Mervyn Peake \" href=\"http:\/\/www.mervynpeake.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mervyn Peake <\/a>with the classic <a title=\"Titus Groan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mervynpeake.org\/gormenghast\/titus.html\" target=\"_blank\">Titus Groan<\/a>. I do also like to read biographies; it really can be anybody I\u2019m curious about.\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC:\u00a0 What is your favourite childhood memory?<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>My first day at Saturday art school in <a title=\"Melbourne\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitmelbourne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Melbourne<\/a> at the <a title=\"Victorian College of the Arts\" href=\"http:\/\/vca.unimelb.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Victorian College of the Arts<\/a>, School of Art. , In those days the building was old , the smell of paint, echoing of the halls was very impressive to a nine year old. They had children\u2019s classes on the weekend.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC:\u00a0 What music do you listen to?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>In the studio I listen to <\/em><a title=\"ABC Classic \" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/classic\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>ABC Classic <\/em><\/a><em>if I&#8217;m in the mood for that, or Alternative music such as <\/em><a title=\"Dead Can Dance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/12368-Dead-Can-Dance\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dead Can Dance<\/em><\/a><em>, or Indian devotional music such as <a title=\"Karnataka College of Percussion\" href=\"http:\/\/karnatakacollegeofpercussion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Karn<\/a><\/em><em><a title=\"Karnataka College of Percussion\" href=\"http:\/\/karnatakacollegeofpercussion.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ataka College of Percussion<\/a>, Lotus Signatures, or Krishna Das.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC:\u00a0 Share something about yourself that may surprise our readers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>I once jumped out of a plane over the <a title=\"Lockyer Valley \" href=\"https:\/\/au.totaltravel.yahoo.com\/directory\/activities\/australia\/qld\/southerndowns\/ipswichthescenicrim\/?filter=adventuresport\" target=\"_blank\">Lockyer Valley <\/a>on a beautiful day about 20 years ago. The visual memories of that day are still imprinted in my brain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong><strong>C:\u00a0 What do you do when you\u2019re not working on your art?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>Sleep! Seriously I love the garden, and reading of course. I live on 2.5 acres and half of the property is still natural bushland. It is overgrown with weeds and its an ongoing project of ours to restore it. Regular trips to <a title=\"Greening Australia Nursery \" href=\"http:\/\/www.qld.greeningaustralia.org.au\/GAQOTSASP\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greening Australia Nursery <\/a>supply the plants which are native not only to Australia but native to our particular location. The easiest way for me is to create a piece and then talk about that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AC:\u00a0 Do you have a particular process you use to get into the creative zone?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>Turn up at the studio, try not to procrastinate too much, ignore the washing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong><strong>C:\u00a0 Tell us some of the things you need to consider when creating these works?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>DM:\u00a0 <em>Is there a true emotional element to the work?
