Seabastion&#8217;s\u00a0paintings are primarily concerned with the human condition, making use\u00a0of animal archetypes to reflect upon our relationship to the psychological landscapes we inhabit.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2770\" alt=\"Seabastion Toast\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast.jpg\" width=\"760\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><strong>AC: Describe your art in a sentence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ST:\u00a0 My paintings are primarily concerned with the human condition, I make use of animal archetypes to reflect upon our relationship to the psychological landscapes we inhabit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: Who or what inspired you to become an artist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ST:\u00a0 I was fortunate enough to have received the academic schooling to be able to pursue almost any kind of career. I chose to study art because it was the most challenging and, in a sense, all encompassing. Art allows me to maintain a wide range of interests and for me happiness comes from total immersion, whether it be art, science, philosophy or sport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: What is your favourite medium to paint in and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ST:\u00a0 Acrylics. I like to work fast and in layers so the quick drying time and clean up suits my personality.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2771\" alt=\"Seabastion Toast\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast02.jpg\" width=\"760\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast02.jpg 760w, https:\/\/www.artchat.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Seabastion-Toast02-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<strong>AC: What music do you listen to while painting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ST:\u00a0 I am a real geek with an insatiable appetite for knowledge so I am usually listening to\u00a0 <a title=\"Radio National\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/\" target=\"_blank\">Radio National<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Science Podcasts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/science\/programs\/podcast.htm\" target=\"_blank\">science podcasts<\/a> or <a title=\"Art Lectures\" href=\"http:\/\/nyaa.edu\/nyaa\/art_and_culture\/profpractices.html\" target=\"_blank\">art lectures from the New York National Academy.<\/a> If I do listen to music\u00a0at the moment it would be a mix of <a title=\"Bonny Prince Billy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.absolutepunk.net\/showthread.php?t=3461291\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnie Prince Billy<\/a> (Will Oldham), <a title=\"Ween\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ween.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ween<\/a>\u00a0or some tacky 80&#8217;s mix to dance around to in the studio. Audio books are also a great way to squeeze some reading in \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: Tell our readers something about yourself that may surprise them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ST:\u00a0 At age 15 I helped build a toilet up the <a title=\"Everest Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mounteverest.net\/expguide\/route.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Everest Trail<\/a> in <a title=\"Nepal\" href=\"http:\/\/welcomenepal.com\/promotional\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nepal<\/a>\u00a0 with <a title=\"Peter Hillary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peterhillary.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Hillary<\/a>\u00a0 (son of <a title=\"Sir Edmund\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/onthisday\/hi\/dates\/stories\/may\/29\/newsid_2492000\/2492683.stm\" target=\"_blank\">Sir Edmund).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I spent my 20&#8217;s cycling up and down the <a title=\"east coast of Australia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/australia\/travel-tips-and-articles\/52497\" target=\"_blank\">east coast of Australia<\/a> on my own with just a tent, Walkman and the landscape for company. I have covered <a title=\"Melbourne\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitmelbourne.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Melbourne<\/a>\u00a0 to <a title=\"Cairns\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cairns-greatbarrierreef.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cairns<\/a> , <a title=\"England\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitengland.com\/things-to-do\/cycling\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> cycling to <a title=\"Spain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adventuretravelgroup.com\/p\/bike-tours\/barcelona-girona-pyrenees?gclid=CL6Nuv3rr7wCFRUDvAodo0wAvQ\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a>, and <a title=\"Byron\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitbyronbay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Byron<\/a> to <a title=\"Sydney\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sydney.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney<\/a> at least 8 times.<\/p>\n<p>I began my art career with experimental sound art and performance art and have an early spoken word piece immortalised in the vaults of <a title=\"National Film and Sound Archives\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nfsa.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Screen and Sound.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I changed my name to Seabastion Toast legally in 1999&#8230; possibly as a result of being at art school and being enamoured by both postmodernism and <a title=\"beat poetry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/learning\/glossary-term\/Beat%20poets\" target=\"_blank\">beat poetry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oh and yes, despite my name, I am female.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AC: What are your favourite colours on the palette?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ST:\u00a0 <a title=\"Burnt Umber\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.pantone.com\/2012\/04\/reinventing-the-color-wheel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Burnt umber <\/a>and ultramarine are my staples. I would never use black.
